This is an experimental series of interactive videos that was born from a reflection on its own medium. The videos were displayed in a dark room with the projection screen on the bottom wall and a pointing device (mouse) in the center, on a pedestal. This elevation of the object of interaction is intentional, through interactivity, the intervenient role of the observer in art becomes explicit and unquestionable, the mouse grants him the power to manipulate the work and the videos return to him is own image as such.
Click #1 (Clique para Clicar)(Click to Click)
Interactive stuff feed a certain compulsiveness. Through the daily use of computers we have begun to replace any mental effort for the gesture of "clicking", a recent verb. Most people to whom I showed this video would always click the button even before reading the message, and then would be disappointed to its uselessness, even though announced, as if it was a bad joke. Nevertheless, the button would keep on being pressed even after the understanding of its redundancy. That is the video's intent, to reveal the "clicking-observer", and to meditate on "click for click" as a form of "art for art".
Click #2 (AS2-Enigma)
The code used to build these flash applications is called ActionScript 2.0 (AS2). Following the concept of "Click for Click", I found it relevant to explore a way to turn the programming code into its own objective. So I came up with this device, with a circuit appearance, where each element is identified by its instance name and announces the actions it triggers on other elements. If there is the will to it, the interactive viewer will realize that the puzzle's purpose is to make the movie go to a frame where he will find only another piece of AS2 code that will restart the application. If you don't have the patience you can check it through the sequence A1-A2-B1-A1-AB1-AB13-G123-A2-G123.
Click #3A (Passadeira)(Treadmill)
I worked in a supermarket cashier for some time. In tedious moments, while I wasn't allowed much more, I would entertain myself activating and stopping the conveyor belt. In this moment of dullness I thought about creating a similar exercise through these videos - while the viewer awaits for something to approach in the treadmill he realizes how he actually is fulfilling an idiot task. Nothing will show up in the treadmill, in fact, this video was shot in a train station where the security officer kindly offered himself to prevent people from using the treadmill while i was filming. That's him we can see over there...
In the second version, the treadmill rolls loud and continuously causing some discomfort. The sound of the treadmill was built by mixing screechy, metallic sounds and sounds of heavy machinery, it stops only while the viewer is pressing the button and that's when you can hear some peaceful music in the back - the famous duet for the opera Lakmé, Sous le Dôme Épais (Léo Delibes 1883). The viewer is impelled to keep pressing the button.
Click #4 (Puzzle)
A video is fragmented into twelve squares. Each square is dragged, plays and suffers a 90 degree rotation when selected. The idea is to play hide and seek with the viewer, as the perception of the whole video is lost, new images and interpretations are formed. It's a puzzle with the purpose of being disassembled, with infinite possibilities.
Click #5 (Gente) (People)
in this video, the click gesture turns the observer into a sort of voyeur, making strangers parade before him randomly. Within the several people that cross the framing, filmed by chance, there is one singular case that originated a perfect composition, one could say meticulous and intentionally studied. In fact it is the only situation that unmasks and compromises the position of the viewer/author.
Click #6 (Olhar) (Stare)
This button crates a sudden twist of roles. The viewer manifested an expectation by pressing the button, and now that expectation is returned to him by a look that transforms himself into the observed subject. After a while, a loss of interest is manifested, the order that the act of clicking represents, is despised, and the viewer is left again on his own.
